Team ISDS India bags top honors at AWSDC 2016, Bangkok

For the first time ever, Team ISDS India bags top honors in the 3rd Asia World Schools Debating Championship

Chennai, India – August 22, 2015 – Team ISDS (Indian Schools Debating Society) representing India and comprising of 4 exceptionally talented debating champions, shone bright on an international arena by winning the 3rd Asia World Schools Debating Championship (AWSDC), held between 6th and 10th July, at Bangkok. Students from Sri Sankara Senior Secondary, Adyar; Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, Nungambakkam; Doon School, Dehradun and Bala Vidya Mandir, Adyar, bagged top honors at the competition, after jousting with proficient teams from Singapore, South Africa and Sri Lanka, to bring home the grand recognition.

Asia World Schools Debating Championship (AWSDC), is an annual international debate competition founded by the Debate Society of Anglo Singapore International School. AWSDC adapts the World Schools Style debate format which is a combination of the British Parliamentary and Australia-Asian formats, where some of the brightest minds from around 55 nations across the world take part. It is one of the most dynamic and engaging formats of debate. Each team consists of 3-5 debaters who each make 8 minute speeches either as side proposition or side opposition for or against a motion respectively.

Team ISDS representing India at the tournament, supported by Ramco Systems, has performed in multiple international tournaments held in Washington DC, Qatar, South Africa and Thailand, since 2008.

This year, witnessed the participation of 32 teams from 13 countries. Some of the popular teams in the competition included China, Singapore, Malaysia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Japan. Team ISDS, supported by two coaches – Amrithavarshini Venkatesh/ Dhruva Bhat, broke as the 3rd highest team after 6 initial rounds of debating, and qualified directly to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Upon return, the team was also felicitated by His Excellency Dr. K Rosaiah, Honorable Governor of Tamil Nadu, in addition to being invited to the residence of the Indian Ambassador to Thailand, to recognize their achievement.

Wins like these truly reflect the commitment of these students to achieve in global arenas and Ramco recognizes that. We are happy to be providing students with opportunities to engage with the brightest peer minds across the world.

3 speakers from the team, Aniroodh, Chaitanya and Tejaswini were placed among the top 35 speakers in the tournament. Dhruva Bhat, one of the coaches, was also adjudged the 2nd best adjudicator in the tournament.
