World Schools Debating Workshop

From June 13 – 18, 2008, Ramco Systems organized the Chennai Schools Debating workshop, in conjunction with the English-Speaking Union an international education charity based in London, for some of Chennai’s most prestigious schools. (Arsha Vidya Mandir, Bala Vidya Mandir, PS Senior Secondary School, Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, Sr. Sec School – KK Nagar & Nugambakkam, Shree Sankara Sr. Sec School.) The workshop was held to teach students the skills in debating, argument and rhetoric. It also introduced students to the World Schools Debating format, which provides a formalized structure for debates between two teams of three speakers each. The workshop had been led by coaches from the UK who had come to Chennai on behalf of the English-Speaking Union: Patrick Emerson, Alex Worsnip and Eve Hibbert-Keene all of whom have extensive experience of debating as competitors, adjudicators and coaches.

A range of debating sessions from reasoning and evidence to listening and response, expression & delivery was conducted. Topics such as International Relations and rights were covered in the workshop. The workshop culminated into a mini competition, resulting in the selection of the five students who would enter the World Schools Debating Championships to be held at Washington.
